Getting Your Heritage Book Published: What Are the Routes?

There was a time when getting a book published was hard. There used to be only one route- submitting your book to commercial aka traditional publishers. Yes, we are talking about the times when the computer was not invented.

After many decades, a new version of publishing came into light, known as self-publishing. Time and technology have been changed over time, making publishing a book easier than ever. Technology has opened up more avenues for budding authors who are trying hard to get their book to a large number of audiences.

If you are a heritage book writer, before looking for heritage publishers in Australia, make sure you are well aware of all the different routes you can take in the journey of getting your book published.

Commercial publishing

To describe this path, it is safe to put it this way: you are done writing your book, finding a publisher and then check all the submission guidelines to submit whatever may be required. After that you have to wait; usually, it takes about three months, but in some cases, it could take longer or shorter. Either you get rejected or requested to submit the entire manuscript.

In case you are accepted, you are given a contract. With commercial publishers, you do not need to pay anything; instead, the publishers take all the financial risks.

Partnership publishing

In this case, you need to pay an amount of money for the services to get your book published. Services include copyediting, laying out, and designing the cover. The partnership publisher organizes the book distribution event, submitting them to bookstores, as well as advertising the book on their websites.

It is you who will take all the financial risks associated with publishing, although the partnership publisher takes half the amount from your royalties.

Self-publishing

As its name suggests, self-publishing means you are doing everything related to getting a book published. You need to organize everything from editing to designing, finding a printer and even deciding the size of the print.

To wrap up

Above are some of the ways available today to get a book published. If you are new in this, no wonder publishing your first book may seem the hardest thing to you. There are some who uses the traditional publishing method that turns out suitable for them, while some opt for self-publishing. Self-publishing is nowadays getting more into the picture as an alternative route of publishing. No matter the path you take, always remember to make sure you are doing it with all the effort from your end.

If the results are not satisfactory, do not get upset as “there is light at the end of every tunnel”. Take pride in what you do, and have faith in yourself.
